(Salamandra salamandra) Descendants of the first animals with backbones to live on land, salamanders are one of the oldest groups of existing terrestrial vertebrates. The earliest known true salamanders lived about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic Period. Today there are about 380 different species of salamanders belonging to 10 different families.
